Altman Weil Advisor Richard Reed is Honored

Newtown Square, PA, August 12, 2003 – Richard C. Reed, a senior advisor to Altman Weil, Inc., received the Sam Smith Award at the annual meeting of the ABA’s Law Practice Management Section in San Francisco last week.  Mr. Reed was honored for his contributions to the Section and to the legal profession.

The Sam Smith Award was created by the ABA Law Practice Management Section on the occasion of its 25th anniversary celebration in 1999.  The first award went posthumously to its namesake Sam Smith, a founding member of the Section, and was established to recognize a lifetime of service in the field of law practice management.

Mr. Reed was chosen as this year’s recipient of the award to honor his service to the Section (as Chairman 1984-85, and later as Governance Liaison); his decades of law practice and leadership; his prolific writing and speaking on law practice management topics; as well as his contribution as a mentor and friend to lawyers throughout the profession.

“We have always felt extremely proud and fortunate to work with an individual of Dick’s caliber,” commented Altman Weil principal Ward Bower.  “He has made many important contributions to the profession.”

Richard Reed practiced law for 41 years in Seattle, Washington and was Chairman of the Board of the Reed McClure Law Firm.  After his retirement from Reed McClure in 1989, Mr. Reed became a consultant to the legal profession, joining Altman Weil in 1991.  He is an emeritus principal of Altman Weil and continues to serve as a senior advisor to the firm.

Mr. Reed is the editor and author of numerous books, including several innovative works on billing strategy that are still widely read and referred to.  His books include: Beyond the Billable Hour, Win-Win Billing Strategies, Billing Innovations, Managing A Law Practice, and Applying Total Quality Management to the Law Office
