Bruce MacEwen is the founder and president of New York City-based Adam Smith Esq., LLC, an Altman Weil strategic alliance partner.  He consults exclusively to law firms in the U.S., U.K. and Canada on strategic and economic issues. 

Adam Smith, Esq. (www.adamsmithesq.com) is one of the most highly regarded online publications in the legal industry.  Launched in 2004, it has become the preeminent site for thoughtful commentary on law firm economics, generating a third of a million page views per month.

Prior to founding Adam Smith, Esq., Bruce MacEwen was CEO of a dot-com company.  He practiced securities law in-house for nearly ten years at Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter; and prior to that practiced litigation and corporate law with two prominent New York law firms.

Mr. MacEwen has written for or been quoted in a broad range of national and legal trade publications, including: Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg News, International Herald Tribune, National Law Journal, ABA Journal, and Law Firm Inc.  He has been named as one of six charter members of the Editorial Board of the US edition of the UK legal magazine, Managing Partner

He frequently appears as a speaker at law firm retreats and legal industry conferences addressing strategy, finance, and IT issues.  He has lectured at Harvard, Georgetown, and NYU law schools on law firm economics and the realities of a 21st Century law firm.

He is an adjunct professor at SUNY/Stony Brook's Graduate College of Business, where he has taught the core course "Strategic Technology & Innovation" in the MBA program exclusively for law firm leaders. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association's committee on Law Practice Management.

Education

Mr. MacEwen earned his B.A. in economics, magna cum laude, from Princeton University, his J.D. from Stanford Law School, and he has completed his MBA coursework at NYU's Stern School of Business.  He is admitted to practice in New York and Pennsylvania.
