Ward Bower, 1947 - 2016: Altman Weil Principal and Unparalleled Law Firm Advisor

Newtown Square, PA, October 3, 2016 - It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our partner and friend Ward Bower.  He died September 28th of a sudden heart attack.

Ward Bower was a pioneer in the field of law firm management consulting. He joined Altman Weil in 1975 when the profession was in its infancy and built an unparalleled career over four decades as an advisor to hundreds of law firms, including some of the largest firms in the world.

Trained as a lawyer, Ward was a natural strategist who applied his deep intelligence and unremitting intellectual curiosity to the emerging discipline of the business of law.  He was one of the foremost thinkers in the profession whose articles were published in every major legal media outlet in the United States. He keynoted meetings at bar associations and law schools around the world, and his comments on the law firm market appeared regularly in the legal and business press.

Ward gave back to the legal community throughout his career, holding multiple leadership roles within the American Bar Association and International Bar Association.  He was a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the College of Law Practice Management.  He served on the Board of Counsellors of the Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania State University.

He was a 1969 graduate of Bucknell University, served as an Air Defense Officer in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1970 and 1971, and received his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in 1975.

Ward took the job personally.  He cared about each of his clients and invested the full force of his knowledge and experience in their success.  He was a teacher and mentor to young consultants, and was unfailingly generous in using his vast network of friends and colleagues to make connections for others who needed his help.

Within Altman Weil he was a leader.  Ward lived the philosophy of ‘firm-first’ and was a patient listener, a trusted voice and a steady hand in supporting and advancing his partners and his firm.

He was a terrific and engaging friend who read voraciously, had travelled the world, was always interested in new ideas, and was a devoted fan of the art and science of baseball.  Among a lifetime of accomplishments, one of his proudest roles was as captain of the 1969 Bucknell Bisons baseball team.

You couldn’t know Ward without knowing the enormous love and pride he felt for his family. He leaves behind his wife Linda, sons Miles, Chase, Reid and Seth, and grand-daughters Eleanor and Sierra.

Relatives and friends are invited to Ward's Memorial Service on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 South Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Ward with donations to the Travis Manion Foundation at http://www.travismanion.org/; the Bucknell Baseball Program (c/o Bison Club. 1 Dent Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837); or University of Scranton-Baseball Program (PO Box 1385 Scranton, PA 18501-1835).
