Douglas B. Richardson is an adjunct consultant with Altman Weil, Inc. He focuses his practice on leadership and professional development for law firms and law departments.
Prior to his affiliation with Altman Weil, Mr. Richardson spent over two decades as a principal, consultant and practice leader for several major international human resources consulting firms, where he specialized in the unique needs of lawyers and the legal profession. He has worked with scores of law firms and law departments to build effective teams through leadership development, to assess and resolve the issues of dysfunctional organizations, and to develop mentoring and associate development programs. He has extensive experience in performance coaching, career counseling, and emotional intelligence skill development.
Mr. Richardson began his career practicing law as a state and federal prosecutor and litigator with Dechert, Price & Rhoads in Philadelphia. He was Regional Counsel for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, and subsequently served as that department's Director of Communications.
For over 20 years, he was a featured columnist for Dow Jones' online Career Journal and its hard-copy predecessor, The National Business Employment Weekly (NBEW). He presently writes a monthly column on young lawyers' issues for American Lawyer Media's Legal Intelligencer in Philadelphia and earlier wrote a weekly column on alternative careers for ALM's The New York Lawyer. His articles have appeared in The National Law Journal and The Wall Street Journal, and he has been quoted in Inc., Fortune, The New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is the author of Dow Jones' NBEW Premier Guide to Networking and Haiku Talks Business.
Mr. Richardson is a long-time board member and program leader for Leadership Philadelphia, a program providing intensive leadership development to emerging community leaders. He also serves as a program leader for Altemus, a Brussels-based leadership development program for emerging leaders of Eastern European countries. He has led career development programs for the Wharton School, the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, Cornell's Johnson School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Rutgers Law School.
Education
Mr. Richardson holds a B.A. from the Honors College of the University of Michigan, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a Masters in Communications from the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School of Communications. He has been certified as a Certified Master Coach by the Behavioral Coaching Institute and the International Coaching Council.
